I would like to offer a personal welcome to the School of Dentistry at the University of Dundee.
We are a close-knit community of highly skilled and dedicated staff who are very proud of our excellent teaching and world leading research activity. Our students enjoy a supportive and friendly environment that responds to their needs and respects cultural diversity.
Our mission is to remain Scotland’s leading dental school that continues to transforms lives through its exciting, and challenging curriculum, delivered by highly motivated and empowered University and NHS staff. By working with students in a technologically advanced and supportive environment we prepare them for professional service in tomorrow's NHS, and encourage those students with aptitude and interest the opportunity to develop an academic career.
We are also charged with sustaining a research profile which is focussed and strategically led; which utilises our complementary strengths in e-health, informatics, public health and laboratory science to address key health issues that face the Scottish population.
In terms of global reach, we are fortunate to have students with us in Dundee from Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America; plus, in Egypt, we are teaching a MSc in Orthodontics programme which is delivered in Cairo using a ‘flying faculty’ model and is hosted by our partners The Arab Society for Continuous Dental Education.
We greatly benefit from a close working relationship with the schools of Medicine and Nursing. A strong collegiate approach to teaching and research offers our students unique inter-professional learning opportunities where dental, medical and nursing students can learn core skills such as team working and professionalism together. Due to our geographical location, close to the city centre, we are very much part of the fabric of the local community, with which we enjoy unparalleled approval. This distinguishes us from other dental schools in the UK.
We have a reputation for excellence. The Dundee Dental Hospital and School has a very strong relationship with the local population where we have provided high quality care for 100 years. Nationally and internationally we are recognised a centre of excellence for teaching, learning and research where students, staff and visitors remark on the welcoming and friendly atmosphere we extend to all. I urge you to visit and see for yourself!
Our School provides undergraduate degrees in Dentistry (BDS), Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSc), and an increasing portfolio of taught masters programmes as well as PhD degree training.
Teaching is innovative and technologically advanced: from learning anatomy and some surgical procedures on Thiel cadavers, dental skills in our state of the art facilities including 3D projection. In the final year students also benefit from regular duties in our seven outreach centres: community dental clinics in Fife, Angus, Dundee, Tayside and the Highlands. As for research, we are recognised globally for our work in public health services research, craniofacial anomalies and dental caries. You will find more details on this website.
The Dental Hospital celebrated its centenary in 2014 and the Dental School has its centenary in 2016. To celebrate this we have invited 10 alumni of the Hospital and School to deliver a series of Centenary Lectures. All those invited are currently Heads of dental schools or post graduate deans in the UK. I think you will agree that this is a remarkable achievement for a school of our size and that this epitomises the Dundee spirit of punching well above our weight! Celebrations will culminate in a Centenary Alumni Dinner in June 2016. As a permanent record of the celebration we have written a short ‘History’ of the Dundee Dental Hospital and School which will be available at a modest cost from the University On-Line Store. Naturally, as alumni you are not only welcome to celebrate in 2016 – you are welcome back anytime.
I am proud of what we are achieving in Dundee – a Dental School that is truly excellent in global terms; that is friendly and inclusive. We are loyal to the School as a community – and to the community of Dundee.
