University of Dundee dentists focus on communication

Dr. Siyang Yuan and Professor Ruth Freeman from the University of Dundee's Dental Health Services Research Unit have established a new Special Interest Group within the European Association for Communication in Healthcare (EACH).

With members from Universities all over Europe, the group will focus on increasing international collaboration on grant applications, commentaries, editorials and articles on communication research in oral healthcare.

'We can, I can' - Scottish Cancer Prevention Network on World Cancer Day

Scotland’s leading experts on cancer will gather on World Cancer Day this Thursday (February 4th) to outline how everyone, from governments and health authorities to individuals, can take action against the disease.

Experts say around one-third of the most common cancers in the UK could be prevented by changes in diet, physical activity and body weight.

The Scottish Cancer Prevention Network’s fifth annual World Cancer Day conference takes place in the Merchants’ Hall in Edinburgh with the theme of `We Can, I Can’.

Mouth Cancer Awareness Week 2015

University of Dundee dental students have launched the local tranche of an annual national campaign to raise awareness of mouth cancer – a disease few people realise the risks of.

As part of Mouth Cancer Awareness Week (MCAW) 2015, students are highlighting the issue with a range of activities while also raising funds for The Ben Walton Trust, a charity dedicated to raising the profile of oral cancer in the UK. 

Scott Hastings launches Mouth cancer campaign at Dundee Dental Hospital

Dental and oral health experts in Dundee are taking to the streets during Mouth Cancer Awareness Month in a bid to raise awareness of mouth cancer. 

Charity patron and ex-Scotland rugby international Scott Hastings launched the event at a ceremony at the University of Dundee's Dental School on Wednesday, 18th November.  

Scott said, 'This campaign will bring a life saving message to the public in a friendly and accessible way. It's a very simple check that we should all know about.' 

Closer links with SBV in Pondicherry

A delegation of senior representatives from one of India’s premier healthcare, academic and research institutions is visiting the University of Dundee this week to explore possibilities of developing closer links between the two institutions.

The visit from Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University (SBV) in Pondicherry follows a similar trip made to India by staff from the School of Medicine at Dundee in January.

The Indian delegation will visit facilities in Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification over the course of their time at Dundee.

Bringing the world to Dundee

The Saudi Arabian Embassy Cultural Attache has signed a contract with the University of Dundee to train outstanding students from their country as medical doctors and dentists.

The first formal agreement between the Saudi government and the University of Dundee will fund three annual intakes of medicine and dentistry students to a bespoke one-year foundation course. A total of eight students are expected to join each intake.

Life Changing Research

Research at the University of Dundee has been ranked among the very best in the UK in the main test of research quality carried out by higher education funding bodies.

The Research Excellence Framework 2014 has seen research assessed for quality and impact. The results of the REF will be used by the funding bodies, who between them allocate about £2 billion per year of research funding to UK universities, based on the quality and volume of each university’s research.

Dexterous Nirmal Shah

Dundee Dental School Year 5 student Nirmal Shah has been awarded this year’s Laurence Usiskin Prize by the British Orthodontic Society in recognition of his outstanding elective project that studied treatment needs and demands among children in Tonga.

Success !

The University of Dundee’s Winter Graduation celebrated the hard work of some 494 students from the College of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing, including 12 PhD awards.

Among them, Dr Stephen McSwiggan, graduated Doctor of Philosophy. Stephen is Senior Clinical Trials Manager in the Tayside Medical Science Centre (TASC), which is a partnership between the University and NHS Tayside.

He is now heading to Liberia with Medecins Sans Frontiers to help deliver an Ebola vaccination trial.
