School of Dentistry's Clare Ratcliff heading to national competition final

A University of Dundee student will be heading to the final of a national dental skills competition, following an exciting win in the local heat.

The Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (RCSEd) - Dentsply Sirona Dental Skills Competition saw final-year School of Dentistry students given the task of constructing a high-quality complex mouth mould in one hour, with Clare Ratcliff ultimately crowned the winner.

First graduates from School of Dentistry’s Orthodontics (MSc) Cairo course

A group of students from the University of Dundee’s pioneering Orthodontics (MSc) course delivered in Cairo made the long journey to Scotland last month, taking to the Caird Hall stage to receive their qualifications.

Meet the nurse who travelled 6495 miles to study at the School of Dentistry

The University of Dundee has welcomed one of its newest students, Michelle Green, a resident of the remote island Tristan Da Cunha.

Michelle will eventually be Tristan’s on-site dental nurse and has come to the University to improve her skills.

She said, “I was really nervous and scared about making the trip to Dundee, it’s a lot bigger than what I’m used to.

Professor Graham Ogden appointed Dean of the Dental Faculty at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow

Professor Graham Ogden, Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Clinical Sciences at the School of Dentistry, will now lead the Dental Faculty at the only multidisciplinary Royal College in the UK.

Graham’s new position at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow means he will be responsible for ensuring its Dental Faculty sets the highest possible standards of healthcare by providing career support to its members -- through education, training, professional development, examinations and assessment.

Professor Ruth Freeman appointed to board of UK Public Health Register

The University of Dundee’s Professor Ruth Freeman has been appointed to the board of the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR).

Ruth, a professor of dental public health research in the School of Dentistry and co-director of the Dental Health Services Research Unit (DHSRU), took up her new appointment following the UKPHR Annual General Meeting in September.

Report card decreases dentists’ antibiotic prescriptions

Dentists prescribe fewer antibiotics after they receive a personalised report detailing their past prescription rates, according to a 12-month randomised controlled trial in UK general dental practices.

The trial which featured all 795 antibiotic prescribing general dental practices in Scotland has shown a 5.7 percent reduction in dentists’ antibiotic prescribing rate after receiving the intervention.
