Susan graduated in dentistry from the University of Glasgow in 2001. She completed Vocational Training then General Professional Training before taking a Senior House Officer post at Dundee Dental Hospital. She then combined working in general practice in Glasgow with hospital and community sessions in NHS Forth Valley whilst studying for a Master of Public Health degree part-time. Prior to her current appointment Susan worked as a Senior Dental Officer in NHS Tayside providing treatment for a variety of patient groups and supervising undergraduate students in dental outreach and the department of restorative dentistry at Dundee Dental School.

In 2012, Susan was appointed as a Clinical Lecturer with the Dental Health Services Research Unit. She is currently undertaking specialty training in Dental Public Health and splits her time between this, postgraduate research and undergraduate teaching.
