Patrick graduated from the University of Glasgow with a BDS (with commendation) in 2012. He completed Longitudinal Dental Foundation Training in Glasgow, during which time he passed the membership examinations (MFDS) at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 2013. 

This was followed by Senior House Officer posts in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and in Restorative Dentistry in Dundee Dental Hospital and the Edinburgh Dental Institute. 

In 2016 he was appointed as a Clinical Research Fellow/Honorary Specialty Registrar in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Dundee Dental School and is completing a PhD under the supervision of Professor Jan Clarkson and Professor David Ricketts. Alongside academic training Patrick is currently undertaking specialty training in Restorative Dentistry.

Patrick also serves on the MFDS Examination Standard Setting Committee for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

Patrick is the Clinical Research Fellow for the INTERVAL Dental Recalls Trial, a UK-wide multicentre randomised controlled trial led by the University of Dundee. The aim of this clinical trial is to investigate the most effective dental recall interval for the maintenance of oral health for adults.

His research interests include the implementation of evidence based dentistry into clinical practice to improve health. He is currently completing a PhD under the supervision of Professor Jan Clarkson and Professor David Ricketts.
