Paula joined the Dental Health Services Research Unit (DHSRU) in January 2011 and works primarily within the Translation Research in a Dental Setting (TRiaDS) Programme, which is part of the Effective Dental Practice Programme.

Paula completed her PhD at the University of Dundee in December 2011. The broad area of the thesis is variation in healthcare and is from a health economics perspective; however the focus is on describing and explaining the variation in the use of radiographs across Scottish NHS dentists.

Prior to undertaking the PhD and joining DHSRU, Paula spent 3 years working as an economist in the Scottish Government Health Department.

Paula’s primary role is within the Translation Research in a Dental Setting (TRiaDS) Programme. Embedded within the Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme (SDCEP), the aim of this programme is to develop an integrated portfolio of multidisciplinary translation research to establish a framework for the translation of guidance into practice.

Paula’s main area of interest is in the implementation of research evidence into clinical practice; with a particular focus on the impact of patients and physicians in this process of behaviour change. This involves a range of research methods including randomised controlled trials, qualitative interviews, national survey data and the linking and analysis of large routinely collected healthcare datasets.

Paula led the data management and analysis from a National Audit on Oral health Assessment, which was completed by over 1000 dentists and developed a similar audit on Antibiotic Prescribing in dentistry, currently being completed by over 500 dentists.

Paula is also a member of the Scottish Dental Practice Based Research Network (SDPBRN), which works in partnership with primary dental care providers to encourage, facilitate and conduct high-quality research in the primary care setting.
