Debbie Bonetti received her first degree (BA) from the University of Sydney. After several years in the Australian Commonwealth Government Service (predominantly in the Department of Foreign Affairs), she left Australia and attended the University of St Andrews, where she completed an M.Litt (Health Economics and Management) in 1996 and completed her Ph.D. (Health Psychology) in 2000. She has held appointments as a research fellow in the School of Psychology, University of St Andrews, and then in the Department of Psychology at the University of Aberdeen, before joining the Dental Health Services Research Unit, University of Dundee, as a senior research fellow in 2004. She was awarded a Chartership in Health Psychology from the British Psychological Society in 2007.

Her research interests include the development and application of psychological theory to understanding the beliefs and behaviour of health professionals relating to the implementation of evidence-based practice. She is particularly interested in developing theoretically informed interventions and in developing more efficient trial methods in terms of intervention selection and evaluation.
