Smile Healthy with your Diabetes An Oral Health Coaching-based intervention for patients with Diabetes {Phase I Turkey:2010-2012: Phase II Denmark: 2012-2014)

PI: AB Cinar

Objectives This international study evaluated if a new common risk factor approach with behavioural intervention, namely oral health-focused Health Coaching (HC), had a higher impact compared with Health Education (HE) on T2DM management.

Material and methods: This prospective intervention study selected T2DM patients (n=109) in Copenhagen, by stratified random sampling. Initial and final data were collected at the Dental School, Copenhagen University. Participants were allocated to HC (n=41) and HE (n=68) groups. Outcome data were HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) and self-assessed oral health behaviours.

Several Results At baseline, no statistically significant differences were found between HC and HE groups, except age (p>0.05). Post-intervention, HbA1C was significantly lower in the HC than the HE group (p<0.01). Linear regression showed that, in the HC group, self-assessed oral health and behaviours were statistically significant predictors of HbA1c change from baseline to post-intervention (p=0.001

Conclusions and clinical relevance These findings accord with study phase 1 (Turkey); HC has a significantly higher impact on management of diabetes and oral health behaviours compared with HE. Improvement of oral health behaviours by HC contributes to lower HbA1c. This strategy warrants further study.

The results from Phase-I have been published at several international publications and they were presented at several congresses. The findings from phase II are on the process of analysis and publication.
