We have received exceptional feedback from our Dundee Dental Insight (DDI) programme that has been running over the past few weeks.
We welcomed 49 pupils from schools across Scotland to the work experience programme within Dundee Dental School. Pupils spent three days within the school and learned about dentistry and studying at our University.
School pupils received hands-on experience within our clinics with current students. They worked their way around stations including: tooth extraction, cavity cutting, cavity filling, impressions, local anaesthetic haptic simulator, dental X-rays, ultrasonic scaling, rubber dam and endodontics, fissure sealants and oral cancer mouth check.
The programme has allowed potential dental students from a wide variety of backgrounds to access the profession and learn about the training involved. The work experience has been designed to increase diversity and ensure that students entering the BDS programme are fully aware of the commitments required for study. Research has shown that students who have experienced the course before they enrol, are less likely to withdraw.
One pupil said, “I enjoyed speaking to students about their experiences and the clinical skills activity was great! The information from presentations and talks was very helpful, too!”
Another added, “I didn't expect such a thorough and detailed insight into both Dentistry as a career and life here in Dundee. I feel much more informed and extremely secure in my decision to apply to Dundee Dental School following such an amazing and informative experience!”
This is the second work experience event by DDI, with last year’s programme being a great success. DDI hope to continue with the support of staff and students, and eventually become embedded within the dental school long term, so both current and future students can benefit from it.
The DDI team would like to sincerely thank everyone involved for their time, effort, cooperation and support with the programme.
